Tyler Naugler is in his 6th season as the Head Coach of Men's Hockey at Saint Mary's University.
Now entering his 25th season with the program, Naugler has served as head coach since the 2020–21 season. Initially appointed as interim head coach, he guided the Huskies through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic during the 2020–21 and shortened 2021–22 campaigns before being officially named head coach in 2022.
Over four seasons at the helm, Naugler has compiled a 65-45-6 regular season record (.580 winning percentage) and earned AUS Coach of the Year honours in 2022–23 after leading the Huskies to the AUS Finals and a berth at the U SPORTS National Championship. Most recently, Naugler led the Saint Mary's Huskies to a silver medal at the 2026 U SPORTS Men's National Championship.
During his tenure, the program has produced multiple standout athletes, including U SPORTS All-Canadians Derek Gentile (2024–25) and Justin MacPherson (2021–22), U SPORTS Major Award winner Matthew Welsh (2022–23), and AUS Most Valuable Player Derek Gentile (2024–25). Several Huskies have also represented Canada at the FISU Games, including Andrew Coxhead (2023, 2024), and Justin MacPherson and Matthew Welsh (2023).
Prior to becoming head coach, Naugler spent 18 seasons as an assistant coach, playing a key role in the program's sustained success. From 1997 to 2004, he worked alongside former head coach Trevor Stienburg, helping guide the Huskies to an AUS Championship in 2002—the program's first in 25 years. That championship team was later inducted into the Saint Mary's Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.
Naugler returned to the Huskies bench in 2009–10 and contributed to one of the most successful eras in program history. That season, the Huskies captured both the AUS Championship and the University Cup (CIS National Championship), the first national title in program history. He also helped lead the team to a University Cup silver medal in 2013 and bronze in 2015.
Beyond his work at the university level, Naugler has demonstrated a strong commitment to player development at the grassroots level. As lead instructor of the Saint Mary's Jr. Huskies Hockey Camp, he has played a pivotal role in the growth and success of the program.
A native of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Naugler developed through the local minor hockey system alongside former NHL All-Star Glen Murray. He later played in the MJAHL with the Cole Harbour Scotia Colts, where he was teammates with future NHL players Aaron Downey and Eric Boulton. Following three seasons of university varsity hockey, he transitioned into coaching.
Naugler resides in Halifax with his wife, Sarah, and their four children: Emma, Mady, Hank, and Laurel.
Matt Malloy is in his eighth season as an assistant coach with the Saint Mary's University Huskies men's hockey program, most recently helping the team capture a silver medal at the 2026 U SPORTS Men's National Championship.
Prior to joining the Huskies, Malloy coached at the U15 and U18 levels, building a strong foundation in player development. He has also been actively involved with Hockey Nova Scotia's High Performance Program, serving as head coach at the 2024 Atlantic Challenge Cup (U14 Male) and the 2025 QMJHL Cup (U16 Male).
In 2021, Malloy served as video coach for the Canadian Men's National Team at the Channel One Cup in Moscow, Russia, as well as the cancelled Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland.
Malloy has also worked in scouting, previously serving as the Nova Scotia scout for the QMJHL's Cape Breton Eagles.
